Rosselkhoznadzor may ease restrictions on imports of animals and genetic material from the EU
Rosselkhoznadzor is considering the possibility of resuming supplies of live animals and genetic material from the European Union. This was announced by the head of the department Sergei Dankvert at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
According to him, the epizootic situation with foot-and-mouth disease in the EU countries is stabilizing. If the positive dynamics are maintained, the department is ready to reconsider the previously introduced restrictions if the safety of products for the Russian agro-industrial complex is guaranteed.
Recall that the ban on the import of animals susceptible to foot-and-mouth disease and products from them was introduced on January 20, 2025. Veterinary certification of relevant goods from the EU was also suspended.
In May 2025, Russia received official foot-and-mouth disease-free status from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), which increased the export potential of domestic livestock products and reduced internal risks.
It should be noted that the import of breeding pigs from the EU was suspended on January 15, 2025.
Reference: Foot-and-mouth disease is an acute viral disease that is dangerous for cattle and small ruminants. It spreads quickly and causes significant losses in agriculture. The main control measures include vaccination and the elimination of foci of infection.
